Google and the Press Release

Note: The following is a repost from the Horn Group Blog.

Seems like we’ve been posting a lot on the press release recently: Leo doesn’t think it’s dead and mostly I agree but think it’s practical uses are beginning to evolve.

Adding to the thread is Andy Lark, who yesterday posted some interesting though unverified information about the algorithms used by Google News to index releases. It seems things like headline word count and the use of special characters can prevent Google from picking up a release. Does this mean we’re going to have PRO (Press Release Optimization) specialists now? I sure hope not.

Andy by the way will be appearing on Sabrina’s panel tomorrow at Software 2006, along with Sarah Lacy (BusinessWeek), Fred Vogelstien (formerly at Fortune), and Bruce Lowry (director of global PR at Novell). They’re going to talk about social communications and stuff. Should be good.
